DESCRIPTION:The Diverse Profession Roundtable Education event welcomes diverse professionals of color to network and participate in professional development and educational opportunities from community leaders and others on topics of interest to this group.\n\n\n\n"The Legislation of Black Hair in the Workplace"\n\n\n\nDr. Tanya Mears an Associate Professor in the History and Political Science Department at Worcester State University where she teaches courses on the African American experience in the British North American colonies and later U.S. A graduate of historically black Tuskegee University with a BS in History\, Dr. Mears earned a master's and doctorate from the W.E.B. Du Bois Afro-American Studies Department at UMass Amherst.\n\n\n\nHer scholarly interests include: Colonial New England\, African American history\, and the politics of Black hair. Dr. Mears was awarded an American Antiquarian Society fellowship for her outstanding research. Additionally\, Dr. Mears received the 2017 Diversity and Inclusion Award from Worcester State University for her work with the university's first generation students and students of color. She is one of the developers of the school's Ethnic Studies Concentration.\n\n\n\nDr. Mears' forthcoming book analyzes short biographies\, autobiographies\, sermons\, and narratives written in New England on the occasion of Black criminals' execution during the colonial era and early republic period.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Tanya Mears\, Professor of History\n\nWorcester State University
